With our modern way of living, often we do not realize how amazing this is. Often these fruits are available to us even when it isn't their season to produce. We get grumpy when we are craving one of them and it isn't available. In spite of us, here they are doing what they are to created do and in the time frame that they are to do it.
I have heard people speak of seasonal eating: eating food only when it is in its season. I don't think I could do that. Colorado's seasons are pretty short and that would make for quite a dry season with very little to no food to enjoy. I do think back to a time when that was the only option. People ate what was fresh or canned or dried or go without. The thought of those times make me happy to have the conveniences we have now.
In spite of our modern ability to have most of what we want when we want it, something happens. Fruit, in its season, fresh off a tree....
Ahh the scent, the bouquet of flavor, the juiciness...mmm.
It raises us to a spot of truly enjoying and appreciating fruit in its season. It is such a gift. How I hope that this summer (likely the last I will have with the amazing variety of fruit I have in this yard as I am moving), will be filled with those moments of pure enjoyment and gratitude for fruit in its season. How I hope that wherever I find my new home to be, there are trees and bushes and a place to grow a garden.
Those of you with your gardens, fruit trees and vineyards, I wish you a bountiful season and many moments of appreciation for the gifts you will have to enjoy.
