Yes we have always been health conscious and we have always eaten differently than most of his peers. But my son is now at the age where he tells me "Cant we just have a normal breakfast" My husband has explained to him (more than once) that "normal is a point of view. What is normal in one house may not be the normal in another" Shakes and green smoothies in our house ARE the normal. We have been eating them really for as long as he can remember. Though on Shabbat (Sabbath - Saturday) morning, I let the kids pick a special breakfast which is always something other than green smoothies.
I have decided that one morning a week though I would cook them a hot breakfast. We will still get our green smoothies in on that day, it will just be for lunch instead. Last week, I made homemade gluten free cinnamon rolls. That was my first time ever trying to attempt to make those They came out pretty good and were gobbled up in the course of 2 days. Today, they had gluten free pancakes and hashbrowns with orange juice. My son also had some eggs. While my daughter leans more towards vegan, my son would rather be a vegetarian. Though most of the meals in our house are vegan - I do buy one carton of cage free range fed eggs per week.
So all that said today was their "normal" breakfast. They got both got super excited about their food and know that I love them enough to spend some time in the kitchen cooking for them. This is the art of compromising. So 5 days a week they will get the breakfast I prepare. I can only hope all the healthy meals and smoothies and fresh juices I have gotten into them in their childhood will impact their health as an adult so they will thrive. But I guess we shall see what choices they make in the future. At least I know for now, I am doing my part and they wont remember everything as me "torturing" them with green smoothies or fruit shakes every morning of their life.
