My personal belief is that his body is out of balance. My son also has a very heavy sweet tooth, which has been shut off now at least at my house. I can't control what happens at his fathers. One thing I was reading in my schooling was talking about expanding foods & contracting foods. The main expanding food out there is white sugar. These foods can can cause feelings of lightness and a mood lift. As I am sure many of us know. What is a typical go to food for many under stressful situations ..... chocolate. However, when the effects of the contracting food have worn off then we might find ourselves depressed, or have low energy or maybe anxiety. The body then starts to crave contracting foods to balance the cycle. A major player in the contracting foods is salt. Salt is used heavily in processed foods and also can be poured on our plates to our hearts content. (which in my sons case is often a lot) Other contracting foods are animal foods such as meat and eggs. The more contracting foods that we eat, the tighter our bodies become and then as a result will end up wanting more expanding foods.
This sounds like a vicious cycle and one I could see my son actually being in or on depending on how you want to look at it.
So what are ways to deal with it or causes of it?
Well causes, he has not made the best food choices this last year that is for sure. We are on a better path overall now again and I have noticed many positive changes in him once again. Now that is not to say he is perfect and there is never issues. He is 12! Eegad the hormones! but we are working through it and I think we are getting him balanced out again.
One thing you can do if you find yourself stuck in this cycle is try to break it. We have been working on adding in more healthy foods and thus crowding out the foods you may not want in your diet anymore. Another thing we have been doing a lot of is incorporating more leafy greens! We have been drinking green smoothies for breakfast, having one salad a day and also have some sort of green juice during the day as well. You can not go wrong really with adding more leafy greens and sometimes salt cravings can also be a signal that your body is mineral deficient. Leafy greens and many vegetables are a wonderful source of nutrition that is high in minerals. I have also started to buy the kids sea weed crackers again. These are also a natural source of high nutrition. I know they may sound ground but they are actually really tasty!
Personally I have really been enjoying the green smoothies & the green juices. My body is starting to crave those once again. And I was really impressed when faced with the choice of eating some junk food or making a green smoothie for myself, I opted for the green smoothie and passed up the chips ;)
So time to deconstruct those cravings and get eating and life more under control once again.
